Wine Cellar in Manor House
Background
Gatton partnered with Smith & Taylor wine suppliers and designers of wine cellars to design, fabricate and install wine cellars. It has been a fruitful partnership continuing with the wine cellar for the Manor House at Pyrton. Gatton were supplied design drawings, which we used as a base for manufacturing drawings.
The manor house is ten-bed, Grade II listed building. The house and grounds have undergone significant renovations over the past 400-years.
Design
The completed cellar houses 26 magnum bottles, 592 wine bottles and 432 cases. Dimensions of the cellar before display units installed was five by four metres.
Detailed plans and fabrication have had to overcome a slope of seven inches from one corner of the cellar to the opposite corner. The slope was due to a stream running underneath the manor house and through the centre of the cellar. This meant the wine bottle display units had to be ‘stepped’ to accommodate the slope - resulting in a flat-level for the series of displays for all bottles.
Fabrication
Bespoke wine display units were manufactured from solid oak, with top angled units painted in Annie Sloane Aubusson Blue chalk-style paint. Bespoke metal work for bottle displays in top angled units.
The wine cellar is temperature controlled, with tube heaters and thermostatic controls installed to ensure consistent warmth levels.
Cellar also includes six foot solid oak centre table for wine tasting, the table sits level - design and fabrication taking account of the slope of the floor.
Two six foot solid oak cupboards (containing glassware, etc) were also fabricated.
Follow-on Work
The manor house was is one of a multiple wine cellar projects fabricated and installed for Smith & Taylor.
Large cellar projects have also been completed for Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Restaurant and Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons in Oxfordshire (hotel and restaurant establishment owned by Raymond Blanc).
